Description
A wonderful Greek black-figure lekythos depicting Hercules and the Cretan Bull, 5th Century BC, the Seventh Labor of Hercules. The scene involves Hercules who stands right wrestling the bull to the ground, draped over his left shoulder and holding a coil of robe; his club and lion's skin behind him. Behind the bull stand a youth, with chlamys over his shoulder, who stands right holding a pair of long spears, his upper body turned back; an uncertain object above. The background is filled with a beautiful vine motif, black bands below, the shoulder decorated with a fantastic interlocking floral band with vertical tongues above, the handle and inside and outside of the mouth in black. The scene is beautifully painted and the vessel is a product of a high end workshop. H: 7 1/2 in (19.2cm). Light surface deposits. Ex New York private collection.
