Description
1882 1ed Women of Mormonism Froiseth Mormon anti Polygamy Illustrated Feminism

Jennie Anderson Froiseth was an important anti-polygamy advocate in Mormon-centered Utah Territory in the 19th-century. She composed and edited books, such as ‘The Women of Mormonism’ that helped non-Mormon readers to understand the dangers, misery, and sin of polygamy. ‘Women of Mormonism’ is full of first-hand accounts of women who lived within a polygamist home and includes quotes from non-Mormon pastors. One preacher is quoted as saying,

“I have read some of the proof sheets of ‘The Women of Mormonism.’ If the statements made are true – and they are amply vouched for by intelligent and trustworthy persons – they will certainly stir the blood of those who read them.” (Froiseth)

Froiseth uses language and quotes to infuriate the reader – she writes about Heber Kimball who referred to his wives as ‘cows’. “I think no more of taking another wife than I do of buy a cow, and if you want to build up the kingdom you must take more wives.” (Froiseth, p.30)
