Description
A choice Roman red-ware plate fragment depicting Adam from Genesis, Chaps 1-2, North Africa, 2nd half of the 4th Century AD. Adam is depicted standing nude, holding a fig leaf to cover his nakedness from God, left hand upraised and gestures as if speaking to God. This is likely depicting Adam's response to God in Genesis 3:12 which states, 'the woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate'. Genesis 3:7 records how after they ate of the fruit from the Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil, 'Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and mage themselves loincloths'. Eve would have been present on the opposite side of the dish. 3 x 2 1/2 in (8 x 6.8 cm). Ref: Light from the Age of Augustine, p. 29, no. 15; Weidemann 1990. Fig. 3. Ex Santa Barbara, CA private collection.
