Ancient Near East, Babylon, ca. early 1st millennium BCE. A wonderful mold-formed buff terracotta figure of a bearded male god, perhaps Nergal, the war god of the underworld and one of the Babylonian deities mentioned in the Bible. Standing in a striding pose atop an integral plinth, he wears a flowing ankle-length robe and a large headdress, with one arm hanging at his side and the other grasping a scepter with a spherical head. Likely a votive figure made to be kept in a home shrine or altar, this figure is a nice example of classic Mesopotamian anthropomorphic depictions. Size: 6.125" H (15.6 cm).

Repairs near torso and shins, with small losses along break lines. Feet and front portion of base restored. Expected age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks and chips to head, base, and body, fading to facial features, otherwise very good. Nice earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
