Description
A beautiful Old Babylonian terracotta votive plaque, c. 1900 - 1750 BC, depicting a seated god extending a measuring rod and cord to a another god standing before him. Both wear long flounced gowns, horned helmets, and are nicely detailed beneath light mineral deposits. 4 1/2 in x 4 1/4 in (11.4 x 10.8 cm). While do not know the exact story behind this piece, the image of a god extending the measuring rod and cord to another god is likely taken from a Babylonian story or myth, that would have been well-known at the time of origin. A possible story depicted may come from the story of Inanna and Gilgamesh, in which Inanna did give to Gilgamesh the rod and cord in exchange for his aid. Inanna, a goddess, was at times depicted as a male, and as a half-god figure, Gilgamesh may have been depicted the the garb of the gods. Displayed within a Riker mount. Ex Rice Collection, Southern California.
