Description
A large and stunning Amlash rhyton in the form of a humped bull, c. 1000-800 BC, with beautiful burnt orange original coloration still remaining. The hollow vessel has a prominent hump rising from behind the neck and two long horns extending from the head, curving slightly. The rippled texture extending down the front of the chest imitates the woolly dewlap of a bull. A small tail rises from the top of the large, rounded buttocks, and runs down towards the stumped legs. The long spout, with small eyes to the side would allow for pouring Two connection points, one located in the crook of the hump and the other on the lower back, would allow for a rope to be passed through to carry the vessel with ease. A small tail rises from the top of the large, rounded buttocks, and runs down towards the stumped legs. The long spout, with small eyes to the side would allow for pouring. A collection number reading 76.19.67 is written in black ink on the underside of the belly. H: 10 1/4 in (26cm), L: 15 1/2 in (37cm). Ex collection of Alvin M. Cohen, Maryland.
