Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. early 5th century BCE. A large and sturdy drinking mug with a footed base, a rotund body with gradually widening walls, a deep interior cavity, a flared rim with a slight concave rim base, and a single applied loop handle. The exterior of the cup is covered in a smooth and lustrous glossy black glaze, characteristic of Attic blackware, and areas of the underlying buffware surface show through where glaze has worn away. A lovely layer of silvery patina covers the majority of glazed surfaces. Size: 3.5" H (8.9 cm).

Condition
Repairs to area of rim with small losses along break lines. Age-commensurate surface wear, small chips and losses to rim and footed base, with chips and abrasions to surface glaze. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and nice mineral deposits and silvery patina throughout. Crackling lines to glaze around area where handle meets body are commensurate with aging and not indicative of repair.
