Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Jiwaka Province, Wahgi people, ca. early 20th century CE. A gray-green schist axe set into a wooden cavity that extends outwards, mirroring the blade shape at one elongated end, and providing a counterweight to the blade. The wood is wrapped in woven binding made from dried vines, most of them toffee-hued in color, with darker leather weave further binding all of the components. A narrow, cylindrical wooden handle at a ninety degree angle to the axe head provides a hand hold. This form of battle axe is similar to those made mainly in the villages of Mangarvigar and Gumbigai. Size: 22.5" W x 20.75" H (57.2 cm x 52.7 cm).
