Pre-Columbian, northwestern to central Mexico, possibly Sinaloa, Mixtec, ca. 250 to 1000 CE. A beautifully preserved bowl of the Mixtec / Aztatlan tradition, which archaeologists have recently suggested may be from ancient Sinaloa. The bowl is thick-walled and steep-sided, with a gently rounded base. In tondo is a fascinating painting of a white-outlined abstract avian creature, its long legs down, its wings spread, and its neck curved to fit the head within the wide, stepped red-and-white border above it. Repeated red-and-white borders continue to the rim, which is unpronounced but appears thick because of how thick the walls of the vessel are. The exterior is a pale reddish color. Large chip from underside, otherwise in very nice condition. Light wear to pigment with small deposits, especially on interior. Nicely preserved motifs.
