Description
EILSHEMIUS, Louis Michel (American, 1864-1941): "Windy Day", 1912, oil on board, 20 inches high x 29.75 inches wide (26 x 36 x 1.25 inches framed), signed in pencil lower right, titled, dated and additionally inscribed illegibly (see detail image for close up of illegible portion) in pencil verso. Carved silvered vintage frame with Braxton E. 58th St. NY framing label verso.

Provenance: Prominent European family with old New York ties retired to Florida.

New Jersey born artist who became a Belle Epoch icon. Studied in Germany, Paris, Antwerp including at Cornell, the Art Students League and the Academie Julian. Early influences were the Hudson River School and the French Barbizon School including Corot, Degas, Ryder and Inness. Prior to 1913 he sometimes signed his work Elshemus. Worked in Europe, New York, Africa, Hawaii, Samoa, California, New Zealand, Memphis, Arizona, New Orleans, Florida, et al. Exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, the NAD (National Academy of Design), PAFA (Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts), Society of Independent Artists, Durand-Ruel and was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A major retrospective was held at the Smithsonian. He was an influence on Duchamp and is in many major collections.--Ref. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, NY website; AskArt database et al.

Fine untouched estate discovery condition preserved under glass until the estate was recently settled and the glass was removed for transport, no craquelure, deftly rendered impasto. Edge of panel wear that is barely or not at all visible when centered under frame rabbet, one linear rub lower center. Light frame wear.
