Provenance: Prominent European family with old New York ties retired to Florida.

New Jersey born artist who became a Belle Epoch icon. Studied in Germany, Paris, Antwerp including at Cornell, the Art Students League and the Academie Julian. Early influences were the Hudson River School and the French Barbizon School including Corot, Degas, Ryder and Inness. Prior to 1913 he sometimes signed his work Elshemus. Worked in Europe, New York, Africa, Hawaii, Samoa, California, New Zealand, Memphis, Arizona, New Orleans, Florida, et al. Exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, the NAD (National Academy of Design), PAFA (Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts), Society of Independent Artists, Durand-Ruel and was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
