Ancient Italy, Etruscan, ca. 625 to 600 BCE. An exceedingly rare, large trefoil oinochoe vessel presenting a striking silhouette with its exaggeratedly wide body, a long neck also of generous girth, a trefoil spout, and a trifurcated strap handle. Amplifying its beauty is the extensive decorative program featuring a wide central register of repeating mother birds with baby birds sitting on their backs and stylized stars above their tails; this band framed by abstract designs - spiraled tendrils alternating with bold triangular motifs on the upper register and larger triangles on the lower register - with series of striated bands separate these pictorial bands and an applied ring with diagonal lines marking the lower end of the neck. On the underside of the flattened ring base is a five-pointed star on the recessed central area surrounded by a band of rays on the raised base which is in turn surrounded by those triangles of the lowest register, making for another set of radiating rays. This triangular motif is mirrored on the interior rim behind the trefoil spout, and the handle is decorated with an attractive diamond pattern.
