Description
Greek colonies, South Italy/Magna Graecia, probably Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A rare form of black ware oinochoe (oinechoe, oenochoe), classified as Shape 7, with a raised trefoil rim and a curved strap handle from the back of the rim to the body. The body itself is tall and roughly cylindrical rather than bulbous, and sits on a flat base. The piece is glazed in a deep, glossy black that may have been in imitation of bronze. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 7.5" L x 6.25" W x 11.75" H (19 cm x 15.9 cm x 29.8 cm)
Shape 7 (Shape VII), classified by Sir John Davidson Beazley, is a rare form of the oinochoe, of which nine total shapes exist. Beazley, a British archaeologist and art historian based at the University of Oxford from 1925 to 1956, developed the standard classification system for Greek vases that is used to this day. The British Museum has an example of Shape 7 from the Greek Attic period (1912,0709.1), while the Metropolitan Museum of Art has one from Italy ca. 300 BCE (91.1.465).
