Description
Knickerbocker’s History of New York - Maxfield Parrish illustrations, 2nd ed.
Fabulous edition of Irving's famous mock-serious history of New York, with the old Dutch traditions of colonial days, written under a pseudonym and originally published in 1809 and illustrated with eight tipped-in illustrations by Maxfield Parrish. Considered one of the rarest Parrish books of today and considered possibly his best black and white work. Written by Diedrich Knickerbocker (Washington Irving) and published by Dodd, Mead and Co. in 1915 (second edition). Edges are mostly worn through which is common with many older paper-covered boards. Faux leather covering is scuffed and worn which makes it resemble real leather all the more. Egg-size stain on rear cover, two other dampstains. Spine soiled with title and publisher somewhat smeared. Hinges sound but not perfect. Frontispiece detached but present. Dampstain to upper corner and fore edge on many pages. Three pages with small tears. All the illustrations are in fine condition except one which has some soiling near the top. 299 pages. 8.25 x 11.25.
Please note that this lot has a confidential reserve. When you leave a bid in advance of the auction, submit your maximum. The bidder who has submitted the highest bid wins the lot, provided the bid exceeds the reserve price.
