Description
1850 EXQUISITE New York City Washington Irving Diedrich Knickerbocker BINDING
‘A History of New York’ is an early 19th-century historical account of the origin and development of New York City by Washington Irving. Irving, however, did not put his own name to the work giving credit to a pseudonym of Diedrich Knickerbocker. This is, perhaps, because much of the work is described as a satire and often does not portray America in a positive light. This book was the pinnacle of an elaborate ruse in which Irving started rumors regarding Knickerbocker and his mysterious disappearance.
While this work was written in out of a curious situation, it still offered useful historical information and context.
