Massachusetts State Appointment to Justice of the Peace for Joseph B. Hill of West Stockbridge, 1824, signed by Governor William Eustis and Secretary Alden Bradford; PLUS 1827 Appointment for the same, signed by Governor Levi Lincoln, Secretary Edward D. Bangs; PLUS 1872 US Passport for Henry M. Castle, aged 38, signed by Hamilton Fish; PLUS 1894 US Passport for Mildred H. Gottheil, 1894, aged 23, signed with stamp; PLUS US Passport for Leon Gottheil, 1921, aged 61, signed by Charles E. Hughes. Generally good condition, loose.
Levi Lincoln (1782-1868) was the 13th Governor of Massachusetts (1825–1834) and represented the state in the U.S. Congress (1834–1841). Lincoln's nine-year tenure as governor is the longest consecutive service in state history.
William Eustis (1753-1825) a medical doctor, was present at Bunker Hill (with his mentor Dr. Joseph Warren), Lexington and Concord, the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Trenton. He was a close friend of Aaron Burr, treated Benedict Arnold's wife during their flight. He was Secretary of War under Madison, Governor of Massachusetts 1823-25 (died in office).
Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) was Senator from and Governor of New York, US Secretary of State 1869-1877 under Presidents Grant and Hayes.
