Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Carchi-Narino, Capuli Complex, ca. 850 to 1200 CE. Two footed and burnished terracotta dishes, one in hues of umber and brown and the other in black and red hues, used in ceremonial practices amongst the Carchi-Narino peoples. The smaller vessel has a squat flared foot, wide shoulders, and a deeply-recessed inner cavity with pitting around the upper rim. The larger vessel features a large footed base, tall side walls, a deep inner cavity, and black-and-red geometric patters adorning the exterior surface. Size of smaller bowl: 7" W x 3.125" H (17.8 cm x 7.9 cm); Size of larger bowl: 7.5" W x 5.9" H (19 cm x 15 cm).

Condition
Larger vessel repaired from multiple pieces, several small areas of loss to rim, bowl, and foot, and manganese deposits throughout. Smaller vessel has some stable fissures, minor losses to foot, extensive pitting in bowl cavity, and minor surface scratching. Surface wear commensurate with age and use and minor pigmentation fading and loss to both.
