Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderful pair of pottery bowls, both enveloped in a hue of cream beneath black-painted decoration. The first and largest displays a bulbous body and inward-curved, rolled rim above a deep basin, all sitting upon an applied, ring-form foot. A set of 3 horizontal striations and a band of target-motifs encompass the rim of the ancient vessel, while the body is adorned by an owl-like flying figure with triangular wings and an applied head and legs one side and a flared tail on the other. Alternatively, the smaller vessel displays a round yet stable base, a hemispherical body and a corseted, rolled rim flanked by a pair of petite lug handles. The rim of the fine bowl showcases a wonderful decorative program of 3 horizontal, parallel striations, accompanied by a row of target-motifs, and a ring of fish designs. Collection labels on bases of both. Nicks, abrasions, and scratches to both. Otherwise, both are intact and excellent with impressive remains of pigment and nice earthen deposits.
