Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 672 to 332 BCE. Carved from somewhat translucent white banded alabaster, a charming miniature vessel called an alabastron with a characteristically long body, short neck, and rounded bottom as well as tiny lugs on the shoulders. Such vessels would have held precious scented oils or cosmetics for women to use after bathing as indicated by scenes on ancient vases depicting them in use. Size: 1.25" in diameter x 2.375" H (3.2 cm x 6 cm)
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana USA, acquired over twenty years ago; ex- D.K, Berlin via German auction, November 5, 1976
