Original illustrated artist signed poster, "Freedom To Read" by Maurice Sendak, 1991.
Surrounding the image are 39 original pencil signed autographs by such notables as the feminist Gloria Steinem, author John Rechy, playwright Neil Simon, actor Robin Williams, "Doonsbury" cartoonist Gary Trudeau, Greatful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, actor Harrison Ford, author Leo Buscaglia, et al.
"Freedom To Read" poster by Maurice Sendak was issued to promote awareness to censorship in books and to aid the American Booksellers Association legal defense fund fighting censorship.
The image depicts Mickey, the protagonist of "In The Night Kitchen" riding an airplane made of dough while reading "Oliver Twist". Below are outsized kitchen containers bearing such titles as "Catcher in the Rye", "Native Son" and "The Grapes of Wrath".
*All of these books were banned or censored when first published.
