Description
Roman, Republican Period, ca. 140 to middle of 1st century BCE. A ceramic handle from a Dressel Type I amphora with a stamped maker's mark along its underside that reads "L I SILVES" before terminating at a loss. The Dressel Type I was the most common type of late Republican Roman amphora, produced mostly along the Tyrrhenian coastline from Etruria to Campania; they are found throughout the western Mediterranean, including modern day France and Spain. They were used almost exclusively for carrying wine. Size: 2.9" L x 5.55" W x 3.8" H (7.4 cm x 14.1 cm x 9.7 cm)
