Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on linen and wood, a striking icon depicting the Virgin Mary in beautiful vermilion red vestments adorned with a lacelike trim. The two blue roundels near the top contain the monogram of "mater theou" meaning Mother of God. The golden triple, star-shaped crosses adorning Mary's shoulders and head are an ancient symbol of virginity (the three stars referring to before, during, and after delivery). Her halo complements the decorative trim on her robe with its cream hues and organic floral tendril motifs which are incised and highlighted with a rich brown pigment. The border is occupied byan Apostle and a holy fool on the left and two monastic saints on the right, with an inscription below the Virgin's mesmerizing visage. Nice remains of red and gold leaf adorn the icon as well. Size: 12" W x 14" H (30.5 cm x 35.6 cm)
Icons were some of the first religious artworks brought to Russia from Byzantium. These sacred pictures of the Greek Orthodox church reached a high point in the Byzantine era, however, the Russians brought their own style to the art of the icon. Icons were initially created for use in churches and processions. In time they became smaller and were used increasingly within households. To this day they remain an important form of visual culture in Russia's orthodox religious community.
