Description
Rare African Missionary school girl sampler, Freeport, Sierra Leone, with alphabet and phrase by Lucy Davis, dated January 3, 1843. Silk on wool with vine border, upper right corner with intentional cross-stitch error in black thread, first row of upper case alphabet and four numerals, lower case alphabet, top third with two floral sprays and phrase "We love the Lord he came to save Poor negro from the sinner's grave, Though we are black, and mean, and vile, Lord Jesus on poor negro smile. We love him, and we would not break The least command our Saviour spakes But pray him, by his precious blood, To make us humble, faithful, good." Lower half with large tree with blue and cream colored birds. Signed with English given name of "Lucy Davis" at base. Signed "Lucy Davis Freetown Sierra Leone Jan 3 1843". Housed in a pickled pine frame. Sight - 14 1/4" H x 12 1/4" W. Framed - 18" H x 16" W. Provenance: Sevier County, TN private collection. Overall very good condition. 1/2" x 1/4" repair to wool canvas near one flower bouquet at upper right.
