Nine (9) slave related documents and almanacs, including slave sale report. 1st item: Slave Sale Report from the Clerk's Office of Adams County, KY, signed by the owner/agent, Malcom McNeill reporting "a male - slave, for sale, named Joshua aged about twelve years; of Black complexion, brought from the county of Christian in the state of Kentucky and the said Malcolm McNeill being duly sworn, saith that the said slave has not to his knowledge or belief, been guilty of the crime of murder, burglary, arson, rape, or grand larceny. Subscribed and sworn to, before me this 10th day of June 1822. Woodson Wren, Clerk" with typed and handwritten text. 4 1/2" H x 7 3/4" W. 2nd item: Confederate Certificate of Medical Examination of Slaves reading "We report that we have this day carefully examined Tom aged 39 years, Slave of Estate of Joseph Ma (?) of Noxubee County of Mi[s]s impre[s]sed by Lt A. G. Daz of Macon, Mi[s]s on the 11th day of Feb. 1865 and hereby declare him capable of performing field labor, and consider or pronounce him sound in mind and body except a bad set of teeth. Given at Macon, Noxubee County, Mi[s]s, Feb 11th 1865. A. A. Rowland Surgeon P. A. C. S./J. R. Sirius Asst Surgeon P. A. C. S./Dol (?) McDonell Employed Physician/Medical Board for the Examination of Conscripts 3rd Dist. of Miss." with handwritten and typed text. 8 3/8" H x 7 5/8" W. 3rd item: Letter from John Rogers of Black Brook, Clinton County, NY, addressed to the Honorable Sidney Lawrence (1801-1892), U.S. Representative from New York, dated April 1848. Rogers references the subject of slavery in the territories and the opinion of the citizens of Clinton county stating "the propagation of slavery into territory now free is looked upon with abhorrence and the Northern man who will assist in doing it as unworthy to enjoy himself the [blessing] of freedom". Lawrence would later give a speech on the subject titled "On the Power and Duty of Congress to Prohibit Slavery in the Territories", delivered in Committee of the Whole on the State of the Union, in the House of Representatives, Monday, June 12, 1848. Rogers also mentions the present objections to tariffs, a key concern in the 1848 presidential election. Folded - 10" H x 7 3/4" W. Suicord, Bainbridge, Decatur County, GA, swearing that they will not "during the next succeeding twelve months, barter, give away, sell or furnish, to any slave or slaves, any measure or quantity of distilled or spirituous or intoxicating liquors, without the verbal or written consent of the owners or employers of such slave or slaves, or without the like consent of the guardian or any free persons of color..." with additional oaths, dated October 13, 1853, the term of one year commencing May 21, 1853 to May 21, 1854. Note on blue scrap of paper, attached by two adhesive dots en verso. 12 3/4" H x 7 5/8" W. 5th-6th item: Two (2) copies of "The American Anti-Slavery Almanac for 1839", Vol. I, No. 4, published for the American Anti-Slavery Society, New York, NY. Octavo, one with stitching, one with yellow front paper wrapper with woodcut engraving titled "Emancipation, Ruin -- Slavery, Salvation!!", frontispiece with woodcut engraving titled "What has the North to do with Slavery?", one with frontispiece only, both approx. 48 pages. Includes standard almanac features with twelve woodcut engraving depicting the affects of slavery and segregation with titles such as "A Nation's Act. Man Auction at the Capitol. A Freeman Sold", "Colored Schools Broken Up, in the Free States", and "Southern Arguments to Stop the Mouths of Northern Guests", along with numerous articles on the subjects of slavery and abolitionists, and statistical tables. 7 1/4" H x 4 1/2" W. 7th item: "The Anti-Slavery Record July 1835", Vol. I., No. 7, published for the American Anti-Slavery Society, New York, NY. Octavo, front paper wrapper with title and woodcut engraving titled "Scenes in the City Prison of New York", six pages (incomplete). Includes articles describing the stories of African Americans who had been enslaved and the moral objections of slavery. 6 5/8" H x 4 3/8" W. 8th item: "The Union Almanac for 1851" printed by King and Baird, published by John H. Simon, Philadelphia, PA. Octavo, 1/2" area of stitching, front paper wrapper with woodcut vignette of the American flag, cannon, and ships, back paper wrapper with "Signs of the Zodiac" woodcut print and "Short Almanac", 18 pages. Includes standard almanac features with textual woodcut engravings depicting subject including past Presidents, the Bunker Hill Monument, battles, and domestic scenes, articles focused on the negative effects of the dissolution of the Union, written by notable figures including Edward Everett, Daniel Webster, and an article titled "The Exploits of General Taylor" by Jefferson Davis, with accompanying woodcut engraving. 8" H x 6 3/4" W. 9th item: Civil War or post war laid paper with two period poems in pencil on either side including "Ella Ree", also known as ìCarry Me Back to Tennesseeî, published by Septimus Winner, 1865, and an untitled, possibly original poem reading "Jeff Davis is the President/Of the Seceded States/And he made all his laws accordingly/While himself is doing fine/And the north is left behind...". Also includes envelope embossed "Union and Constitution" with a vignette of an eagle and a shield, with red and blue trim, addressed to "George Folke/Present". Sheet - 12 1/2" H x 8" W. One with later stitching. One without stitching, spine bound with modern white archival tape. 7th item: No stitching present. 8th item: Spine bound with light pink paper tape.
