Description
Italian school painting after Polidoro De Lanciano (1515-1565), oil on wood panel depicting Madonna and Child, with the infant St. John gazing in adoration toward the Christ Child, who reaches out to touch his face. Unsigned. 15 1/3" x 12 3/4" unframed. Probably 18th century. Provenance: A Nashville, TN, estate, acquired while living in Italy in the mid 20th century. Condition
Panel split repaired and attached to top brace (lower brace bar missing). Nail scars affect image at four corners and lower center, including a 1/2" hole upper right. Paint loss along split, including half circle 1/2"L. at lower center. 1/4" abrasion to Mary's dress on her torso, and other small scattered abrasions, particularly an area of wear to upper left corner. Scattered areas of retouch evident with black light, including 1/2" on John the Baptist's arm; 1" area in center; and 2 1/2"L x 3"W area bottom right in folds of cloth. Some worm holes to wood.
