Description
Scarce Currier and Ives lithograph, Old Blandford Church, Petersburg, Virginia, medium folio print depicting an ivy-covered church and grave yard. Published by Currier & Ives, 152 Nassau Street. Undated. 8" x 12 3/8" image, 9 1/2" x 13 1/2" sight, 11 3/4" x 15 3/4" in tiger maple frame. Provenance: Descended in a Charlottesville, Virginia family with ties to the Petersburg area. Note: Built circa 1737 on the highest point in Petersburg (Well's Hill), Blandford Church is the "oldest structure in Petersburg with a clearly documented history." (source: PreservationPetersburg.org ). It was used as a hospital during the Siege of Petersburg (1864-1865) and today stands as a memorial to Southern soldiers who died during the Civil War. Condition
Overall toning and a few spots of foxing; 4" vertical line of discoloration at upper center, 2" stain along lower margin, margins possibly trimmed.
