Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1470 to 1532 CE. An elegant and refined ceramic aryballos (pouring vessel) with an interesting, stepped base, a rounded body that tapers to a narrow, cylindrical neck, a wide, flared mouth, and a strap handle that flows from the broad rim to the upper shoulder. The body is painted with black and red pigment on a pale orange background. The black, in particular, has been painted with very fine brushstrokes, demonstrating the skill of the artist who made the piece. The decorative ring around the shoulder is a series of triangles and squares that immediately calls to mind a mountain range. Around the neck is a crosshatched decoration. Size: 5.2" W x 7.75" H (13.2 cm x 19.7 cm)
