Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. Two flat terracotta figures, one of a woman and the other of her child hanging on her back, in hues of brown and red. The mother figure, seated in a cross-legged position, holds one hand to her abdomen and the other to her mouth as if eating a tasty morsel. Her child, playfully swaying on her back, has his/her hand on her forearm suggesting he/she is grasping for the food mom is enjoying. Both figures display centrally-parted stylized hair, pierced ear lobes, colorful necklaces, and characteristic pointed noses and almond-shaped eyes. A playful duo symbolic of the relationship between a mother and her offspring! Size: 3" W x 3.25" H (7.6 cm x 8.3 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Powers Fine Arts, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex- Sid & Addie Newman, prior to 1980
