Back at auction due to non-paying bidder
Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A rare pottery statuette from the Coptic Egypt depicting an endearing moment of maternal intimacy; a ceramic figure of a mother goddess suckling a child on her lap, almost certainly intended as Isis and Horus. The abstract female presents a semicircular head with a projecting nose as she sits holding her child with her left arm. All is enveloped in beige slip with orange-painted details delineating the eyes, brows, fingers, and bodily adornments. Size: 2.8" W x 5.3" H (7.1 cm x 13.5 cm); 6.2" H (15.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from Charles Ede Ltd, London, England, Egyptian Antiquities, May 24, 2011, #8872; ex-private Madame Maspero collection, Paris, France, acquired prior to 1983
