Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A lovely and very touching example of maternal love in Pre-Columbian art! Modeled in the form of a mother who tenderly holds her child to nurse at her exposed breast. She wears a patterned headdress with armbands and belt, her eyes poignantly depicting tears. It is quite likely this was made to accompany the dead child into the afterlife, the mother showing her grief. Size: 11-1/2"H (29.2 cm).
