Description
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Xenon style, ca. 4th century BCE. A miniature pitcher with a globular body on a very narrow foot, the exterior walls finely painted with added pink pigment characteristic of Xenon ware, featuring a register of laurel leaves on the lower body and a register of vertical frets on the shoulder, the bands separated and underscored by fine lines. Nice iridescence has developed over the ages on the black slip. Size: 2.125" W x 2.25" H (5.4 cm x 5.7 cm)
Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. Miniature vases like this example, perhaps toys or votives, are especially prevalent among this type of pottery.
Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005; Ex-Sotheby's, Sale 8336, Lot 101, 7 December 1995
