Description
Western Greece, Archaic period, ca. 7th century BCE. A mold made, hollow votive figure depicting a woman seated on a wide throne with pointed upper edges. The woman wears a flattened headdress and her clothing is draped over her, though any details have been lost to time. This example has a classic face from this period - realistic rather than abstract, but not yet showing the individualized portrayals from the Classical era. She has the "Archaic smile," which has been taken by art historians to mean that the subject is intended to appear alive and peaceful. She was probably at one time painted brightly. Size: 2.5" L x 3.6" W x 7.25" H (6.4 cm x 9.1 cm x 18.4 cm)
