This graceful bronze dancer is exquisitely handmade complete with Egyptian symbols reflecting the period's fascination with the excavation of Tutankhamen's tomb. The base forms a natural pairing to the sculpture becoming part of the design and form. She wears a headdress of extravagant metal and jewels as well as around her neck and body. She wears a bikini top with beads falling on to her stomach exposing her naked torso, and the most beautifully detailed skirt. The skirt rises at her thighs and then falls longer in between them and had an Egyptian hieroglyphic in the middle. She wears bracelets on her wrist and bangles on her arms. She is absolutely gorgeous and stunning. It's no wonder why she was the king's entertainer!True to the Art Deco period, this sculpture is by Romanian-born and Paris-trained artist Demetre H. Chiparus (1886-1947). Demetre Chiparus was originally born in Romania and exhibited his bronze works in high class galleries in Paris. His figurines and sculptures were based on the ballet and the theatre. His statues were always exquisitely detailed. You can find his name at the base of the sculpture.
