Description
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)Attributed, in the manner of the artist): Landscape with Haystacks, pen and brown ink drawing on laid paper, signed Vincent. Verso bears the stamps of three collectors: Vladimir Barjansky; Paul Brandt; Kunsthandel Huinck en Scherjon.
Landscape with Haystacks may have been an early sketch for Vincent van Gogh's 1889 oil painting, "Evening Landscape with Rising Moon," pictured in this catalog listing. Van Gogh painted "Evening Landscape with Rising Moon" in the early summer of his stay at the Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-Remy de Provence, France. In both "Landscape with Haystacks" and "Evening Landscape with Rising Moon," haystacks dominate the foreground while the moon rises over the lush Alpilles mountains in the distance. A few small houses adorn the mountainside. The sky swirls around a bright moon that attracts the viewer's eye with its magnitude and comparatively drastic coloring. In the sketch, the entirety of the landscape is composed of short, precise lines except for the solid white moon. Similarly, the vibrant, warm yellow moon of van Gogh's later painting stands out against the cold tones of the swirling sky and the rich mountainside.
Dimensions: 10.5x14.5 in. image
Provenance: Paul Brandt, Amsterdam, Vladimir Barjansky, Paris/NYC. Property of a private collection
