Description
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) Attributed, in the manner of the artist): Signed drawing on a sheet of stationary from the Cunard RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. Black ink and chalk, pencil signed and dated 1973, lower right. Unframed.
The QE2 undertook two chartered cruises through the Mediterranean to Israel in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the state's founding. The ship was chartered in April 1973 by Mr. Oscar Rudnik of Massachusetts-based Assured Travel of Worcester. His plan was to use the ship to take passengers from Southampton to Israel for the 25th Anniversary of the Stateï¾’s birth.
1973 also witnessed the issuance in Israel of a set of postage stamps commemorating the famous Chagall stained glass windows at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. Stylistically, this drawing fits within Chagall's vocabulary of dreamlike imagery. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity/attribution by painting conservator/art historian Bruce Wood, MFA.
Dimensions: 8x6 inches
Provenance: Property originally from the estate of Rachel Katz, New York, whose family sailed on the QE2 on a chartered cruise to Israel and presumably received the drawings directly from the artist (celebrating the sailing).
