Huge 1867 Minnesota map by Colton. Very fine example of this early large format map. Finely engraved map of the state with inset of the north-eastern portion at upper right. Highly detailed with identification of regions, important cities, rivers, lakes, mountain ranges, and railroad lines. Development is quite dense in the lower half of the state, tapering off to virtual wilderness in the north. A considerable number of named railroads fill the lower half with one running along the western boundary all the way to the St. Vincent near the Canadian border where it crosses the Red River. Features Colton’s attractive signature strapwork border. Very small split at right centerfold. 17 x 24.25 inches.

Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800 - 1893), known professionally as J.H. Colton, founded an American mapmaking company which was an international leader in the map publishing industry between 1831 and 1890. J.H. Colton Company maps were printed using engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than maps made with less costly wax engravings. They were often individually hand watercolored and were recognized for their decorative borders.
