Description
Dakota (with Manitoba) George F. Cram, 1883. Cerographic relief line engraving with county divisions in yellow and state boundaries outlined in deep rose. This map is very uncommon, unlike the 1884 green and rose version found in later 1883 and 1884 editions of Cram’s Unrivaled Family Atlas. Shows railroads, numerous Indian reservations, forts, towns, rivers, mountains, etc. An early Cram map of the Dakota Territory. Extremely clean on excellent paper with light stains in upper left corner margin (one spot just touches frame); small light stain at lower left frame (does not go into map image) and small light stain at bottom left corner margin. 11.875 x 18.75 inches.
George F. Cram (1842-1928) served in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. After the war ended, Cram joined his uncle Rufus Blanchard's Evanston map business in 1867. Two years later, he became sole proprietor of the firm and renamed it the George F. Cram Co. which became a leading map firm and first American firm to publish a world atlas.
