**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Guinea / Liberia, Baga / Loma people, ca. early 20th century CE. An interesting wooden figure, hand-carved and covered with a dark, soil-based pigment. The figure is a standing woman, depicted nude, with a light texture on her body that may indicate scarification, especially on her stomach and breasts. She stands on oversized, flat feet, and her flipper-like hands and arms hang down at her sides. Her face is geometric, with deep-set eyes made of hammered iron nails set to either side of a long, triangular nose. Her head has been carved to have a crested coiffure. The figure may represent an ancestor. Size: 17.5" H (44.4 cm)
Provenance: the late Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970

Dark patina from handling on surface. Small surface cracks, with the two largest on the foot and on the back of the head.
