Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A cast bronze traveling icon, with two "doors" that hinge open to form a triptych. In the center is a large panel depicting Mary holding the Christ Child. On either side are two panels, each depicting another story from the life of Christ. These icons were used by priests to venerate important scenes from Orthodox Christian scripture and to teach others these stories. Size when opened: 4.9" W x 4.25" H (12.4 cm x 10.8 cm)
