Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Puruha, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. A giant ceramic urn topped by a very abstract anthropomorphic "head". The body of the urn tapers from a wide shoulder to a diminutive, flat foot; it is smooth and has a deep red pigment. Where the body meets the neck, there is a raised band of pottery that gives the impression of being a necklace or a piece of rope. Above that is a flared, conical neck that terminates in an unpronounced rim. On one side of the neck is a face that is human in form but conveys something distinctly other. The eyes are large and bulging, formed of balls of clay incised down the middle; the nose is a narrow, straight line that flares slightly at the bottom. The handles double as ears, decorated with a variety of rings. Size: 14.1" W x 20.5" H (35.8 cm x 52.1 cm)
An urn like this one was made to be used in burials, containing mummified or cremated remains. They have been found inside of caves and buried underneath residential structures. This was part of a wider tradition in the uplands and in the Amazon basin, where urns were used to hold human remains in a variety of pre-Columbian and even early post-Columbian traditions.
