Item Details
Description
Italy, Sicily, Syracuse, Philistis, wife of Hieron II, ca. 269 to 215 BCE. AR tetradrachm (13.0 g) Obverse: Diademed and veiled head left; wreath to right. Reverse: inscribed with Nike, holding reins in both hands, driving slow quadriga right; crescent above. Pozzi 649 var. Size: 1" W (2.5 cm)

Philistis was a queen of ancient Syracuse who is known only through the existence of numerous coins of fine workmanship and from an inscription of her name on the theatre at Syracuse. Hieron II (also Hiero) was tyrant of Syracuse from 270 to 215 BCE, a former general and an important figure in the First Punic War. We know that Philistis was the daughter of Leptines, an influential and wealthy citizen of Syracuse, and that Hieron would leave him in charge when he had to leave the city to fight.
