Description
Greece, Athens, ca. 450 BCE. A ceramic fragment from a pyxis depicting the lower body of a harpy. The pyxis form is found throughout the ancient Near East and the Classical world: a rounded vessel with small fitted lid, originally made to hold cosmetics, trinkets, or jewelry. This example was painted in the black-figure style. The harpy was originally a personification of the wind, but slowly transformed into fierce half-women, half-birds who were listed among the guardians of the underworld. Size: 4.15" W x 1.8" H (10.5 cm x 4.6 cm)
