Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery bowl atop a trio of tab-shaped feet. Decorating each half of the body is a large, incised panel containing an elaborate anthropomorphic bird figure with broad wings, a bullseye-form body, and a grand headdress with plumage arching above. The figures on this piece may represent the Great Goddess - who typically wears a feathered bird headdress - believed to have been the primary deity of the underworld, war, darkness, earth, water, and creation itself. Size: 5.5" W x 6.75" H (14 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
