Description
VITTORIO SELLA. Kangchenjunga 300 feet below Johnsong La W. Side,1899, Sella number HS 102. 10.7X14.5" silver gelatin print, printed 1901, mounted on 14x18" heavy brown board. Embossed with Vittorio Sella stamp in print lower right. Inscribed in black ink mount recto: Kangchinjinga. Inscribed In pencil above print: Jannu. Inscribed in pencil mount verso: below the Jonsong La - / p. 159 / HS 102.
In 1899, from September to October, Sella joined up with legendary British mountaineer Douglas Freshfield. Also on the expedition were Sella's brother Erminio, the guide Angelo Maquignaz, Sella's photographic assistant, Erminio Botta, and geologist Edmond Garwood, so they could map region. The work was published in RoundKangchenjunga, a Narrative of Mountain Travel and Exploration, 1903, by Douglas Freshfield.

Good: Yellowing all edges, dirt minor abrasions and wear. Mount has edge and corner wear; mount verso has tape marks.
