1866 & 1877 Dated Engravings of Abraham Lincoln Including William Edwards Marshall & Timothy Cole
1866 & 1877-Dated, Pair of Engravings of Abraham Lincoln, Engraved by William Edwards Marshall in 1866 and by Timothy Cole in 1877, Choice Extremely Fine.
Wonderful duo of historical Lincoln engravings:
1. First is an Oversize Engraving of Lincoln, image size of 15.75” x 20.75”, Engraved by William Edwards Marshall in 1866. The image shows the slain president in a lifelike, chest-up pose, surrounded by an oval wreath of oak and laurel leaves and with name “Abraham Lincoln” inset below. The image is tipped to a period mat, 21.5” x 26.25”. Sen. Charles Sumner described this image as capturing Lincoln: " ...in his most interesting expression, where gentleness and sympathy unite in strength..." The image is still crisp and dark.
2. Accompanied by a 5" x 7.5" original Woodcut Engraving of Lincoln, with facsimile signature, “A. Lincoln” below. Drawn by Wyatt Eaton and engraved by Timothy Cole, 1877. Inlaid and fine. (2 items)
