Description
**First Time At Auction**
Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. A polychrome pottery male festival mask. The face displays open eyes with painted lashes, brilliant ruby-hued cheeks, dark eyebrows, a goatee, and curly hair, wide ears, and a prominent nose. A peculiar miniature figure is situated atop one ear, and appears to be kneeling and holding its abdomen. Each side of the head is perforated for suspension, and a suspension strand hangs between both holes. Size: 6.625" W (16.8 cm).
Provenance: Tryworks collection complied by the Rev. Richard and Jean Kellaway of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, USA; exhibited in MEXICAN MASKS OF THE 20TH CENTURY: A LIVING TRADITION at the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey, USA

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, fading and loss to applied pigments, minor chips around peripheries, and light earthen deposits throughout. An old white collection number "2241" is visible on the interior of the mask.
