Description
The great warrior Kato Kiyomasa and his men encountering a giant serpent while crossing Yakeyama Pass in the epic tale "The Taiheiki." Kiyomasa is shown atop a rocky outcropping at upper left, dressed in full armor and carrying a long spear, his personal standard or sashimono above his back. At right, the giant snake coils and writhes, ready to strike, its mouth open and tongue flashing. Ghostly horned demons flutter about the supernatural creature, while large bats hover overhead against the dark night sky. At bottom center, a bat grips onto a samurai's sword, while on a rock above, a warrior takes aim at the monster with his gun. A fantastic image with amazing color and outstanding detail, and a wonderfully atmospheric setting. A striking illustration from legend and a terrific choice for a collector interested in Japanese folklore. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
