Item Details
Description
Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, ca. 2040 to 1802 BCE. A beautiful and well-preserved example of an alabaster jar. The heavy stone glows when held to the light. The vessel is well-proportioned, with a wide disc mouth, a gently curved body, and a slightly flared foot. The center of the vessel has been drilled out in order to hold something. This type of vessel was used to hold cosmetics - the Egyptians are famous for their cosmetics worn by both men and women, such as black kohl painted around the eyes. Size: 2.75" W x 3.2" H (7 cm x 8.1 cm)

Provenance: private St. Louis, Missouri, USA collection; ex private Atlanta, Georgia, USA collection
