Description
**First Time At Auction**
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A four panel, cast brass traveling icon, each of the panels depicting four square, low relief scenes of important stories from the Bible and the founding of the Church. Atop each of the panels is an additional major scene, including the Crucifixion. The icon folds together. In order to support traveling priests on missions, bronze and brass religious objects were made that were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through the often wild and rural Russian landscape. These icons were widespread throughout the country by the 17th century, and are often mentioned in the writings of Pushkin and Chekhov. This example has excellent detail. Size: 15.65" W x 6.8" H (39.8 cm x 17.3 cm)
