Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fragment of a bright red terracotta brick made by the Roman legions and stamped with "L E G [two characters unreadable] A V C." Roman legions carried mobile kilns with them in order to quickly build infrastructure when they arrived in a new location. These bricks are stamped with the mark of the legion that produced them and are a valuable resource to understanding the deployment of Roman military forces across the Empire. In many cases, the legions introduced bricks to new areas - and there are still excellent examples of remaining bricks like this one in places like the city walls of Constantinople and the short fort at Burgh Castle in Norfolk. Size: 5.75" L x 5.5" W (14.6 cm x 14 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Carlton Collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
