Description
Scarborough (American, 1812 - 1872) is considered one of the greatest master Southern painters, active mainly as a portraitist. A native of Tennessee, he spent much of his career in South Carolina. Scarborough was born in Dover, Tennessee to John and Sally Bosworth Scarborough, whose family origins were in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Portraits by Scarborough today are found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Columbia Museum of Art, and the University of South Carolina, among other institutions. The Columbia Museum of Art also holds a landscape painting by the artist, depicting the falls of the Reedy River in Greenville, South Carolina and dating to a sojourn in that town in 1840; a handful of other landscapes and still-life paintings have been identified, but the vast majority of his output is in the field of portraiture. This lot features a rare original oil on canvas portrait of a man painted between 1830 - 1850. This piece comes from the Webster Estate in Greene, Co. Tennessee and was purchased from the estate in the mid 1980's. The Knoxville Historical Society has confirmed this provenance. Painting is in rough condition and will need heavy restoration. Oval canvas frame. Measures 30.25" x 24.5". Please See Photos for Details. Shipping Available.
